How much did your parents pay to raise you? How much did they pay for your food, clothing, medical care, dental care, housing, child care and so on?
 
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, raising a child currently costs from $124,800 to $249,180. Up to a quarter-million dollars! For some of our parents, raising us was a major financial burden.

Most people have the wrong idea about leadership. For example, car salesman Jim was promoted to the Sales Manager position. During his first week as manager, he decided to show everyone who was boss.
 
Jim cracked the whip. He held a meeting and told the other sales people, “I want 10 cars sold today or someone will get fired!”
 
The sales people ran around looking busy and avoiding Jim. Everyone tried to force customers to buy cars, but car sales dropped.
 
Jim yelled even louder. “You can’t sell cars by pressuring customers, you idiots! Now get out there and sell these stupid cars!”
 
After a month of this, his two best sales people quit. Sales dropped even further.
 
Jim said, “I can’t believe this! What am I doing wrong?”
 
Five Bad Leadership Attitudes
 
Like many new managers, Jim had these five wrong ideas:
 
“Because I’m the manager, you better respect me . . . or else!”
“People are lazy; I have to force them to work.”
“I’m superior to everyone. I can do anything I want.”
“If you work for me, you need to kiss my butt.”
“If you don’t like how I run things, you can leave.”
Because of these attitudes, Jim’s sales people were selling fewer cars and looking for other jobs. If Jim did not change his attitude, he would also be looking for a new job soon.

We can go on and on with the many reasons why people choose the kind of work they do. Some are motivated by the desire to serve others in spite of the low pay or the lack of it. Some work to simply savor the joys of doing work, as in the arts or in religious service. For others, much money as well as the chance to spread around the blessings it brings pushes them on to work at their jobs. And there are others who do not care about the money but simply work as long as they are able to bring something to the family table.
 
In general, however, people work and do not care much about what they can contribute to the lives of other people. They may work in a shoe factory and realize what they do somehow affects or benefits the lives of other people; but they have no illusions of causing great changes in the lives of others. Nor do they have the desire to reach out to the people they serve to find out how they may make their lives better.
 
Most people simply work and find simple satisfaction in knowing that what they do is valuable; but what matters at the end of the day is the pay they receive after their work is done. It does sound depressing although it happens millions of times throughout the world. Only a few people go out of their way to find ways to make more money so that they can bring more benefits to others or create difference in the lives of people they may not know.
 
Money, after all, is merely a tool. Even without much of it, a person can still cause great changes in the way people live. Unfortunately, in the modern world, it is quite impossible to reach out to people without the financial capability to feed, clothe, employ, teach or heal people. Charitable institutions ask for donations in order to pursue their noble work. Writers and musicians have to sell their works so that they can create more works of beauty.
 
Whatever a person does in life depends on his or her deepest motivations in life, whether it is for money or personal gain or for duty or service to others. The color of money is as varied as the intentions of the heart. But we can certainly try to judge the color of people’s hearts by the kind of work they do, the kind of money they make, the kind of lives they live and the kind of lives they influence.

YouTube allows us to listen to old music or watch old movies that make us feel like teenagers again. Facebook connects us with childhood friends we have lost touch with for many years. The Web practically gives us the ability and freedom to enjoy more jokes, gain more education and wisdom and read more books.
 
There seems to be a surge in spending more time enjoying life using technology or seeing more of our world and appreciating culture and nature, making us feel more energetic and somehow younger in our bodies and our minds. Or so it seems. We may have found the fountain of youth, especially if we consider the flood of new and old information regarding the value of organic or natural food we have neglected for so many years and which our elders considered as their staple food that made them live longer lives without the supplements or medical advantages we have today.
 
Maybe the ability to enjoy life is the secret we may have lost in our rush to build modern civilizations that isolate people from their natural roots and their normal connection to the simple and good things in life. By that, we mean work, especially the mechanical or tedious tasks we do daily, has destroyed our innate desire and propensity to savor every moment of living in the same way that birds and animals do even when they seem to be foraging for food or striving to survive.
 
Yes, “playing” in the Internet, whether it be doing games or “liking” viral photos or videos, may be often done on the sly during office hours or while stuck in traffic, allowing people to escape the harsh realities of existence. Yet, it still speaks much of the normal urge of all people to lighten the load that they bear on any ordinary working day. So much so that we see droves of people head out to the country on weekends or even to the mall to splurge on the happiness or recreation they missed during the entire work week.
 
Rest and recreation has become such a prime commodity these days that we talk of mini-vacations we can take while surfing on our smartphones or dozing off on an office sofa. Work has made us feel so old and tired that we aim to recover our youth as much as we can with as many ways we can think of, whether it through yoga, painting, a movie, biking or chatting real-time or virtually.
 
And many do it, not really to regain their youth consciously but simply to unwind or to be diverted from stressful living. Children used to be immune to boredom and tiredness. They had energy for endless play; lately, however, they have shown tendencies to be easily bored especially when separated from their tablets or their Play Stations. Sleep used to be their only means of rest and real recreation.
 
When we were young, we made our own toys and invented our own games. There was not a place for boredom or lack of real playtime – that is, playtime using our hands, feet, body and mind.  People knew how to be young then. We rested to recreate once more. Today, we may have more varieties of games and toys; but we have less understanding and appreciation for remaining truly perpetually young. We rest but cannot seem to recreate ourselves, physically and emotionally. We are growing old much faster today.

Time!
 
Time is actually just a decision. If you do in one day A, and the next day you do the same A and also you do B, you effectively created time. If a one hour job took you thirty minutes, you created time. If you tightened up your day to create another spare hour, you of course created time!

Jack and Jill

Jack tries to get along and not cause trouble. His neighbor plays loud rock-and-roll music all night long, so Jack buys ear plugs. Jack hates leaving his apartment as the building lobby is full of boxes and junk; he just steps around the mess. His co-worker makes Jack pick him up for work each day with no compensation, “. . . since you drive near my house anyway.” Each year, he develops some kind of illness or needs an operation. After 25 years at the same company, Jack is only making $22 per hour, but he does not mind as his company gives him good health insurance. At the age of 51, Jack gets cancer and dies.

Jill moves into Jack’s vacant apartment and can’t sleep because of the loud music. She calls the neighbor and works out an agreement so the neighbor plays music all day while she works, but won’t at night. Jill convinces this neighbor and a few of the other tenants to spend a few hours cleaning up the lobby and the entry; they even wash the sidewalk and plant some flowers. Although Jill has earned several management promotions and pay increases at her company, she decides to start her own business and makes it successful. She soon buys the apartment building and takes over the top floor for herself. Jill is never ill and at the age of 78, still spends a few hours each week working at her company.

Obviously, Jack adjusts himself to the environment while Jill adjusts the environment to herself. Are you more like Jack or Jill?

Well, he was right! Why? Because every teacher is a leader in his or her own right. And so, to become a good leader, you have to know how to be a good teacher.
 
Here are the tips to becoming a true leader through the mind of a teacher:
 
1.       Learn first what you need to teach or pass on to your people
 
No teacher can give something he or she does not have. It is a basic law of Nature and life. A tree cannot give fruits unless it makes them. And the tree, in turn, cannot give unless the soil gives the necessary nutrients the tree needs. At the same time, the soil will not give anything unless it got its nutrients from animals and from rocks and rivers that provide minerals. All of Nature and life works because someone or something gave first.
What does a leader give to those under him or her? Find them out and then give them.
 
2.      Teaching is more fun for students when the teacher is also having fun
 
We all hated terror teachers and avoided them like the plague. In fact, we had nightmares because of them. So with managers or bosses who terrorize employees. If you want to be an effective leader, be a friend first and make people comfortable with your presence and your personality. Everybody loves a winner. Ad if you can win the friendship of people, you can gain their confidence and their trust. And people love to work with someone who takes everything in stride – that is, when the going gets tough, you would want the leader to be around to guide you. It was always comforting to have a teacher who could answer your questions, whether stupid questions or clever ones.
 
3.      A firm teacher need not be a feared teacher
 
This is related to the previous one; however, it has the added idea of making people realize that at times the leader has to set the bar high on certain issues – such as breaking office policies or rules that could lead to the disruption of organizational or social harmony. When moral issues arise, in particular, the leader who imposes rigid compliance to integrity or decency will have a better chance of instilling discipline and stability to the ship than one who wavers or dilly-dallies.
We always loved our teachers in elementary school who were firm but loving and strict but kind to us all in spite of our misbehavior. A true leader knows when to be flexible and when to expect compliance.
 
4.      Tests are meant to be difficult; make them serve their purpose
 
Written tests end in school, although office seminars at times still utilize them. Nevertheless, tests, in general, will always be the best tool for evaluating the performance of workers. Sales personnel are tested according to their ability to produce by in terms of volume of sales. It is a numbers game, after all. But more than that, even sales people also have to promote not just a product but the values of a company. A top sales person may leave a company; but the goodwill he or she may have developed in favor of the company will remain. Loyal clients will want to patronize your products because one of your own people made a good pitch for the company’s products.
 
In college, we knew who were the most-preferred teachers to enroll under. Not just those who gave high grades but those who taught well and left you happy you studied under him or her. How many people have you heard who said they were proud to be students of the best professor in a certain university?  How many old soldiers were proud to have served under General Patton?
 
5.       Finally, teachers are the best role-models for successful living
 
Even when we grow old, we still remember and pay respect to our truly noble teachers in our school years. They helped to guide us all the way to our adulthood. In the same sense, leaders are our surrogate-parents in the path to a successful professional life as well as a secure retirement period. The true leader desires the success for his or her people in and out of the work environment. For the company does not exist apart from the overall environment it serves and works within.
 
The effective leader, therefore, is as much concerned with sales output or prompt delivery of products as he or she is with happy and secure personnel who have successful families and well-behaved children.
In the end, teachers have served unending lines of generations from the beginning of time until now because they themselves are the first and best leaders we have. If you have never taught a class before but have people under you who depend on your leadership abilities, consider yourself a teacher, first and foremost.
